Baby Boomers: What It’s Like To Remember The Past

September 24, 2014 at 5:04 pm

babyboomer.jpgWhat was life like for you when you were growing up? Baby boomers grew up in a fascinating period of history filled with societal upheavals, major changes in how cultures and communities fostered relationships, and a lot of developments in music and the arts. Baby boomers, classified as those born between the mid-1940’s to the early years of the 1960’s, were part of a massive increase in population after World War II. The baby boom generation is also often considered as the best-educated and healthiest generation in history. If you are not too familiar with how the phrase “baby boomers” came about, you can read this informative article.

If you are a baby boomer, you probably look back with fondness at the major events that shaped history when you were growing up. Of course, because the world was picking up the pieces after another major world war, there was a lot of transition going on all around society, but a lot of opportunities as well as nations tried to return to normalcy and readjust to peacetime.

You probably remember this period when the “American Dream” was first mentioned and became an ideal for a lot of people. As soldiers and military personnel returned home, they reunited with their families or started their own, and there was a nationwide perseverance to uplift one’s economic situation and strive towards a better life. Migration to areas in the northeast, the east coast, and the west coast became a way of life for many attracted by the plentiful job opportunities in these locations.

The baby boom years also contributed greatly to the rise of suburbia. As cities became more crowded, attracting millions of migrants from elsewhere, urban populations began to spread outward, and outlying towns and communities soon absorbed the influx of new residents who worked in the city during the day but lived in the suburbs with their families. Suburbs grew to become part of the American Dream as well, with baby boomers looking at a quiet suburban home as their ultimate goal.

Suburbs transformed sleepy bedroom communities into vibrant population centers on their own, thanks to the rise of the shopping mall, another product of this period in history. People began to troop to the malls and shopping centers for their consumer needs, and malls began to offer anything and everything that shoppers would want, all in one place. Mom-and-pop retail stores soon faced stiff competition from big-box retailers with nationwide delivery and production.

During the ’50’s, movies officially became the favorite form of entertainment, whether it was at the neighborhood drive-in theater, the new cineplexes, or through the television. As entertainment became more affordable and accessible to the masses, households were soon tuning in to their favorite serials and news programs on the television, replacing radio. Radio did not completely disappear, of course, as rock music became the major cultural driving force of the ’60’s. If you need a more in-depth discussion about the baby boom history, you can visit this page.

Children of the baby boom years remember the many national events that shaped our society to this day, with the rapid changes in civil rights, the uncertainty of the Cold War, and the space era.  As you look back at those years, you might understandably feel the need to call your friends and family members who were also around at that time to share your memories and swap stories . It would be useful to take a look at some of the cell phone plans for seniors listed here so you can stay in touch with your fellow baby boomers and relive those days when you were growing up.

The Advantages of Shopping Online This Christmas Season

September 16, 2014 at 6:16 pm

xmasonlineshopping.jpgCan you feel the season changing? The weather is starting to drop, so jackets, coats, and all knitted clothing are coming out. People are becoming happier, busier, and everyone’s just a bit more generous. September has just started, but in some countries, people are already looking forward to Christmas. As December comes, almost everyone participates in the parties thrown, the food being shared, and of course, the exchanging of gifts.

Christmas is one of the busiest seasons for shopping. It’s not just the last-minute rush (although you would want to avoid that!) but even people who come early still find the stores full of people who are also interested in buying gifts. This usually leads to stressful situations for each shopper. The solution? Online shopping.

Here’s why you should shop online this Christmas season:

  1. It doesn’t require you to leave the house

What could be a better reason than this? When you just want to bundle up and sip a cup of coffee, the last thing you’d want to do is get dressed and go shopping amidst the freezing weather. You’d have to walk among the busy crowd struggling to find that perfect gift, and when you finally do, you spend almost an hour waiting in line just to buy it. Then you have to carry all the bags as you trod from one store to another. Not getting out of the house also means no gas purchase (and avoiding having to find parking, that’s always a plus), or commuting fees. So don’t go out! Lie on your couch and get your mug and laptop, and still get that shopping done. That’s convenience at its best.

  1. You can get the best deals

How else can you compare prices without actually having to walk to different stores? If you want a particular product in the mall, you’d have to go to all the shops and check each product and their price difference. Through online shopping, you can get the product for the best price just by searching on different sites. You can also get online coupons which add discounts to your purchases. Come on, that’s better than having to actually print out these coupons and giving them to the cashier in a store.

You also get to avoid these cashiers, and the salespeople who pressure you into buying stuff. You don’t need their sales talk anymore – you can find dozens of reviews online from people who’ve actually purchased the product. With all these comparison, you can find out for yourself which buy is actually worth your money.

  1. Unlimited selections

With online shopping, you have more options to choose from. You wouldn’t be limited to a shop in a certain country or place; you can have your pick among the products in the whole world, some of which are not even available in-store!  And the worst thing you can do is to let your internet connectivity issues limit your online shopping options. Here is the Comcast number that you can call to get your internet issues resolved and you can resume your boundless shopping experience.

  1. Getting mail is so fun

Isn’t it just an amazing feeling when the doorbell finally rings and you get the shipment you’ve been waiting for? Or getting home from work and seeing boxes for you? It’s like Santa’s already been at your house.

  1. Organized expense

With all the email confirmations you’re going to receive, arranging your finances will be easier than ever. Goodbye to lost receipts, hello to digital copies. This is how shopping is done.

Fashion Forecast For 2015

September 7, 2014 at 5:09 pm

Fotor09081057As we’re heading to the last quarter of the year, we say goodbye to our cool, breezy clothing and welcome back our warmer clothes tucked away in storage. We follow the fashion as seasons change – out with the old and in with the new, right?

A few decades earlier, futuristic fashion was imagined to be body fit jumpsuits and metallic fabrics with the latest gizmos attached to matching headgears. Fifteen years in the twenty-first century and we still haven’t quite reached that stage. Try walking around in a metallic suit and you’ll surely be a sight to see wherever you go.

Of course, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t get excited with the latest fashion trends. After all, it’s never too early to start preparing for the year ahead! We wouldn’t want to be the last person to know about the apparel-to-have, so start the look out for 2015’s fashion forecast:

1. A Throwback With A Twist

We can’t always avoid the past, but that’s because we don’t have to. Pieces inspired by the fashion of the 60s and 70s will become trendy in the next year. The classic and vintage comeback slightly mutes the retro vibe, as the combination of thrift shop pieces is reinvented in a modern way, resulting in a creative mix that makes sense fashionably.

2. Dare to Bare

We’ve seen the emergence of bold trends this 2014, so 2015 will definitely take it one level up.  With more women willing to show off their body and still keeping it classy (such as the mid riff cropped top matched with high waist bottoms), it won’t come as a surprise when we see more skin without looking skimpy.

3. The Future is Loud and Bright

We’ve seen tribal prints come and go, but next year’s trend might be more than the vibrant appeal. Bright colors will be mixed with neutrals, but the highlight of this trend will be the right fabrics used, as well as the abundance of detail, like repeated geometric patterns. It’s not Boho and laidback; the artisanal accents create elegance in the intricacy.

4. Comfort Is King

Notice that the material from where the pieces are made of has been emphasized again and again. Gone are the days when people have suffered for the little enjoyment of beautiful things. The re-emergence of big coats, fur clothes, poncho, and knitted outfits prove this true.

5. Androgyny and Equality

Men have worn skinny jeans and women have worn boyfriend jeans. Pieces listed as only for a certain sex have definitely gone out to the sewing machine, and back to closets, regardless of gender.

We might not be walking around with jetpacks yet, but we’ve certainly continued moving forward with fashion and technology, so who’s to say it won’t happen anytime soon? We definitely won’t want to be left out; watch out for the latest fashion tips by tuning in to TV shows via Charter Cable.

Having troubles with your cable? Or you simply don’t have cable yet? The best and easiest way to have access or solve this is to call the Charter Cable Customer Service phone number. With friendly customer representatives willing to help you and set up your new cable, you’re sure to have the hottest fashion news available on your television.
